Chris Whitley Dirt Floor (Messenger) Dirt Floor finds vagabond Texas guitarist/singer/songwriter Chris Whitley returning to the basics of just a man and his guitar. On these nine songs, Whitley plays alone on an acoustic National steel guitar and what sounds like banjo, and sings his tales of wandering and the downtrodden in his singular parched, melismatic style. His picking and slide work are as unorthodox and distinctive as the coursing of his voice and the bluesy angular turns of his songs. Whitley is never afraid to challenge his faithful, reinventing himself from album to album, and here he does so with ringing clarity. |
